Private Francis McCaugherty

Francis McCaugherty was born on 17 July 1898 at 5 Lee Street, Belfast, the fourth of nine children of brushmaker Francis McCaugherty and his wife Mary Anne (nee Henderson). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living with his parents and five surviving siblings at 96 Turin Street, Belfast.

McCaugherty enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 25 May 1915 (No.1606 – later Corps of Hussars No.71468). He embarked for France between 1916 and 1918, and at some point was wounded (see wound stripe on his left sleeve). On 13 March 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

On 25 April 1922 McCaugherty married Eleanor Currie in Belfast. He died at 595 Lisburn Road on 19 December 1967 and was buried in the Belfast City Cemetery (Glenalina Extension).
